What To Look For When Buying a New Smartphone

Tips to buy a new smartphone

Choosing a new smartphone can be difficult, especially as there are so many different features to consider and so many options available on the market. Even if you are a tech-savvy person, the choice is often overwhelming!

Here we have compiled the main things that you should consider when choosing a new smartphone to help guide you towards a decision that suits you and your needs!

Battery Life

Battery Life

For most people, battery life is a hugely important factor. Most of us use our phones all hours of the day, and if you have an active

lifestyle or job that involves traveling you may not always be near a phone charger! There’s nothing worse than losing the ability to contact anybody when you need to, so you should pay close attention to user reviews regarding battery life.

Alongside battery life, storage capacity is probably the most important thing for the average consumer. If you are storing images and documents in the cloud (iCloud, Google Drive, etc), storage space may not be something you worry about too much, but if you want to install a lot of apps on your device then storage space is still very important! Apps are getting larger and larger in size, with some popular apps like Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and Snapchat being famous for taking up a lot of space.

It is also worth considering choosing a smartphone that has a separate MicroSD card slot to further increase storage space.

RAMSmartphone RAM

RAM is largely what dictates how fast your phone will complete tasks – if you do a lot of multitasking (e.g. having multiple apps open at the same time) or gaming, you will probably need a higher RAM. Cheaper smartphones have only 1GB of RAM, whereas others can go as high as 6GB or even 8GB! Generally, 2GB or 4GB is standard and more than enough for most people’s needs.

Display Resolution - What to PickDisplay

The display is very important to consider as most of us in the modern world spend a significant chunk of time each day looking at our phone’s screen! Make sure that the display is bright enough to see when you are outdoors, and the resolution is high enough so that images and text aren’t blurry enough to cause eye strain.

Resolutions below 1920p (pixels) x 1080p can often be blurry, especially on phones that have larger screens. 2560p x 1440p resolutions are optimal if a sharp, clear display is your priority! You should also factor in the screen size – a larger screen means a better experience for viewing videos, but some large phones don’t fit into your pockets, so there is usually a balance to be struck here.

CameraWhat to look for in a smarphone camera

Being able to capture memories of moments of our lives with friends/family at any time is important to most of us, and having a smartphone camera is the most convenient way of doing this. Generally speaking, the more expensive the phone, the higher quality the camera and the more megapixels it will have – however, there are some budget phones on the market that have deceptively high-quality cameras!

Companies like Apple, LG and Samsung have built reputations worldwide for advanced smartphones with high build quality, fast performance, and high levels of compatibility with other devices. However, this isn’t necessarily always the case, and you will almost certainly end up paying significantly more money for a big-name brand! One good example is the xone phone –  high performance phone for a fraction of the price. This is the same company that is manufacturing the xwatch smartwatch, wireless internet speed booster among others.

It is also worth considering companies’ reputations for customer service, security, and handling of customer data – for example, the Chinese company Huawei was recently widely criticized by US intelligence agencies for the way that they used customer data.

Older phones can be a lot cheaper than newer models, especially if you buy them second-hand. However, it is worth considering that they may become obsolete and stop receiving updates such as security patches. In addition, apps are becoming more powerful and demanding on resources, and older processors and memory may not be able to keep up!

Other Things to Consider

There are plenty of other things apart from these main considerations that may be important to you when choosing a smartphone. Features such as wireless charging, the type of headphone jack, speakers (e.g. stereo, mono, etc), and possible 5G capabilities could be worth considering depending on your needs.

Everyone is different, and it is always best when choosing a new smartphone (or any other product) to consider which factors are most important to you and your life!
