The History of RootsCamp

RootsCamp emerged in 2006 as a revolutionary “unconference.” Instead of relying on the tired old format of workshop proposals and a pre-set agenda, RootsCamp is a dynamic participant-led event that brings organizers together to learn from each other's successes and failures. The event is led by progressive organizers from all issue areas and generates a productive, fast-paced, and unscripted learning environment.

RootsCamp is an incubator for fresh ideas, lively discussion and, most importantly, action-driven learning among diverse groups of passionate progressive activists.

The Vision of RootsCampDC

After a year under the Obama administration, RootsCamp is a chance for the progressive movement to come together to share the lessons we've learned about working for progressive change in this new era, focusing on organizing around progressive issues and mobilizing volunteers. RootsCamp will challenge participants to really think about and share what's worked -- and what hasn't -- over the last year. It is a chance for on-the-ground organizers to learn from the best in the country -- and great emphasis has been placed on uncovering the best organizers on immigration reform, LGBT equality, faith-based work, youth organizing, education reform, climate justice, anti-genocide work, and organized labor.

RootscampDC will also be a look back at all the online and offline organizing done in 2009. Everything from how organizations use online organizing successfully, which organizing tools really make a difference, and how to strike the balance between offline and online organizing to accomplish our goals.

Mark your calendars to join the conversation February 20-21, 2010, in DC!

I still have questions about RootsCampDC (FAQs)

So what exactly is RootsCamp?

RootsCamp is an "unconference" convened by the New Organizing Institute (NOI). NOI doesn't set up the conversations ahead of time -- we rely on attendees to identify the topics they want to talk about and the stories they want to share. We will have some pretty interesting folks in the room, but the conversations will ALL be formed by YOU. Yes, it's different, but trust us -- the experience is pretty powerful!

What does NOI do?

The New Organizing Institute is best known for its new media training program (i.e. online organizing), but we're about much more than that. We run training and organizing projects in new media, data/technology, and field/leadership. Our mission is to create a community of progressive organizers who challenge themselves to hone their craft and share their stories with others -- and RootsCamp is a great way to do just that!

Sound interesting, but why should I come all the way to DC?

RootsCamp is a chance to interact directly with some of the best on-the-ground organizers across the country. NOI has done a lot of work to identify talented organizers and bring them to RootsCamp -- people who are doing important and innovative work, but who might not be household names. NOI is committed to connecting, training, and advancing progressives in all stages of organizing, and RootsCamp is *the best* opportunity to improve your work over the course of a weekend.

Great! What will I talk about?

We hope that attendees will talk about both their organizing successes and failures at RootsCamp, in order to share best practices and help other organizers avoid potential pitfalls. This is a chance for the progressive organizing community to come together for a weekend and improve our field -- so we hope that you'll talk about anything that you feel is important to share with your peers!

This is awesome! How do I get there?

Registration is $10, and scholarships are available to cover some part of your travel, lodging, and registration costs. Please see the links below for registration and scholarship information.

We'll see you February 20-21, in Washington, DC!

RootsCampDC Sessions

Have a session in mind that you'd like to see/lead at RootsCamp? Please share the name of the session, and a summary of what you'd like to talk about. Remember, RootsCamp is completely participant-driven and NOT for spectators!

Interesting Sessions from Prior RootsCamps...
Rural Organizing Campaign
Mobilization to End Poverty - Vote Out Poverty
I'd love info on how to deal with volunteer fatigue
Anything dealing with women's issues/rights

Here's an example...

"Organizing LAUSD for Education Reform: Lessons Learned" We just saw sweeping changes in the LA Unified School District as a result of a powerful school reform movement. This session will discuss some of the tactics and strategies we used successfully -- and a few that didn't work. We'll focus on the specifics, but we'll make sure it's applicable for anyone trying to wage a campaign within a city-wide institution. Led by: X Progressive Organizer

The Progressive Message: Beyond "We're Not Bush"

One of the persistent struggles we face as progressives has been succinctly defining who we are in a way that resonates with voters. Conservatives, by and large, can rally around small government and personal responsibility as core values that inform their philosophy. What are our values? What connects a choice activist in Oregon with a labor organizer in Rhode Island? There's no easy answer here, and we might not leave with a firm idea, but we'll start the process and explore how we can strengthen our messaging for 2010 and beyond.

Stories 2.0: Exploring the Government's new media role in playing on America's heart strings.

As the Obama Administration's largest-scale legislative accomplishment thus far, the Recovery Act is the first major example of how we re-define the government and re-invograte the country. At the Department of Energy, we have made it a priority to use new media to communicate thee Recovery Act to the American public through personal success stories. Folks that got hired, CEO's about taking their busineeses to the next level, and field experts/stake holders geeking out over the new opportunities for innovation - all values of the Obama Administration. Is the goverment the right medium to tell this story? For those that worked on the campaign, how must we use new media differently now? Is it worth it? Do people care? All these questions and more as we explore this topic.

Led by: Andy Oare, Recovery Team at Department of Energy

Aaron Enrique Almada

Greetings! My name is Aarón Enrique Almada. My organizing experience began when I worked as a Political Organizer with the Mi Familia Vota campaign during the presidential elections of 2008. Mi Familia Vota is an organization that was locally hosted at the Tucson chapter of Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The goal of the MFV campaign was to register low-propensity Latino voters to vote in the historical 2008 presidential elections. At MFV I worked with an amazing team to register the Latino families of Southern Arizona and also to galvanize communities to vote for Proposition 200 which would require payday loan centers to reform their predatory lending practices or leave the State of Arizona by 2010. Needless to say, the proposition passed and Latinos across the country in general and in Arizona in particular showed up to the polls in record numbers in 2008.

Most recently I was recruited to work with the Reform Immigration for America campaign in Arizona. Upon attending a Movement Building Training, modeled after the very successful Camp Obama framework for youth, in Washington D.C., I became a facilitator and was equipped with the tools & skills necessary to train other youth leaders in the State. In addition, I co-drafted the statewide strategy plan to mobilize the communities of Arizona to pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform in 2010. Now, I serve as the Southern Arizona Co-Lead and oversee all the work in District 8. Working with RI4A has been baptism by fire, but I have embraced the experience whole-heartedly and devote most of my leisure time quite passionately towards the effort. As an immigrant myself, I see the value of the immigrant community and will exhaust all of my energies until the system is reformed. Organizing truly is all about tireless optimism. ¡‘Pa lante organizadores!

Ignite Greensboro is a student run, led and built project that was founded to raise awareness for the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, the city of Greensboro, as well as money for the following purposes: scholarships, community building projects, speaker engagements and a specific intergenerational gift to the museum. Their goal and purpose is to get students involved and aware of the culture and history of Greensboro and involved in many different avenues. The project is currently working on an oral history documentary, a black and white photographic interpretation entitled the Black Marker Project, and a benefit concert series. Students have an opportunity to get involved in any and many more areas of the project, promising them a chance to learn more about this wonderful city.

With the help of many dedicated representatives and team members we have successfully organized approximately 20 events in the past year and raised close to $4,000 from public donors and private foundations. We currently have the interest and attention of all 7 colleges and universities in the area with around 400 people having participated in or shown interest in Ignite Greensboro.

Since volunteering with the Obama Campaign in Iowa and attending Roots Camp in 2008, I have become very interested in leveraging many-to-many communication channels to organize around social change. And I am a huge fan of:

Mark Elliott's work on collaboration through stigmergy | Clay Shirky's work on sociology of tech | Bruce Lee's work on complex systems: "All fixed set patterns are incapable of adaptability or pliability" | James Carse's work on Finite and Infinite Games (inspired Flickr).

i gave up counting on other people to let me do interesting things, and i recently helped organize social justice camp dc, an unconference bringing dc activists together around collaboration, art & technology. i'm unemployed so i'm taking advantage of my flexible schedule to do new things like learning about marketing and pursuing freelance writing work. i'm the marketing chair for let's get global, a grassroots group started by rita golden gelman, author of 'tales of a female nomad.' i'm @ksshew

Prerna Lal

Image:Prerna.jpg

Prerna was brought to the United States from Fiji when she was 14 but due to immigration services teetering with their "aging out" (CSPA) regulations, she aged out on their visa petition after turning 21. Her American dreams were deferred but she fought back this illegal injustice by helping create the largest new media network of immigrant students in the United States called DreamActivist. Today, she has a Masters degree in International Relations, serves as an Editor of The Sanctuary, as an Immigration blogger at Change.org, and currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area where she has trained immigrant youth in social media and helped bridge the gap between the LGBT and immigrant rights movement(s).

It is safe to say that without Prerna, the national online migrant youth movement would probably not exist. Every online community Prerna touches seems to grow, a direct reflection of the courage and energy with which she fights to better her own situation and the situations of everyone and anyone around her that is in need of help.

You can find her online at @desidyke & @DreamAct
